Sen. Bong Go Condemns ICC's Arrest Warrant as a Disrespect to Philippine Sovereignty

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has strongly criticized the International Criminal Court (ICC)'s issuance of an arrest warrant against former Philippine officials, asserting that it represents a blatant affront to Philippine sovereignty and the country's judicial system. He emphasized that Filipinos should be held accountable and judged by their own countrymen within the Philippine courts, operating under Philippine laws, rather than by an international body.
“Let us respect our laws and our legal processes. Filipinos should be judged by fellow Filipinos before Philippine courts, adhering to Philippine laws. This is a matter of sovereignty and respect for our nation,” Senator Go stated firmly. He reiterated the Philippine government's position that the ICC has no jurisdiction over the country, particularly after the Philippines formally withdrew from the Rome Statute in 2019.
The arrest warrant, reportedly related to alleged crimes against humanity during the previous administration's campaign against illegal drugs, has sparked a heated debate within the Philippines. Senator Go’s statement reflects the sentiment of many Filipinos who believe that the ICC's involvement undermines the country's ability to handle its own legal matters.
He further underscored the importance of allowing the Philippine legal system to function independently and impartially. “We have a functioning justice system here in the Philippines. We have our own laws and our own courts. Let us trust and support them in resolving these matters,” he added. He believes that focusing on strengthening the domestic legal framework is the most effective way to ensure justice and accountability.
Senator Go's remarks come amidst growing concerns about the ICC's ongoing investigation and the potential impact on the Philippines' international standing. He stressed that the country must remain steadfast in its defense of its sovereignty and its right to administer justice within its own borders. The Senator also expressed confidence in the Philippine government’s ability to address the issues raised by the ICC investigation through its own legal channels.
The issuance of the warrant has prompted calls for unity and resolve among Filipinos. Senator Go’s strong condemnation serves as a clear message that the Philippines will not be easily swayed by external pressures and will continue to uphold its national interests and its commitment to the rule of law as defined and practiced within its own territory. He urged everyone to remain calm and trust the processes of the Philippine justice system while supporting the government’s efforts to protect the country’s sovereignty.
The senator concluded by reaffirming his commitment to supporting the administration’s efforts in safeguarding Philippine sovereignty and ensuring the integrity of the country’s legal system. He believes that a strong and independent judiciary is crucial for maintaining peace, order, and justice in the Philippines.
