Smaller North-Eastern States Face Unique Hurdles, Demand Increased Financial Aid

Shillong, Meghalaya – Meghalaya’s Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, has made a strong case for increased financial assistance from the Finance Commission for the smaller states within India's North-Eastern region. Addressing concerns about the region’s distinct geographical, economic, and developmental challenges, Sangma emphasized the crucial role of additional funding in fostering sustainable growth and improving the quality of life for residents.

The North-Eastern states, including Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura, often face significant obstacles due to their remote locations, difficult terrain, and limited connectivity. These factors contribute to higher infrastructure costs, impede economic diversification, and create barriers to accessing essential services. Furthermore, the region's unique socio-cultural landscape and historical context require tailored development strategies.

“The Finance Commission needs to seriously consider the specific needs and challenges faced by these smaller North-Eastern states,” CM Sangma stated. “Our geographical isolation and the complexities of our terrain significantly increase the cost of development projects. We need additional resources to bridge the infrastructure gap, improve healthcare and education, and create employment opportunities for our youth.”

Sangma’s appeal highlights the importance of recognizing the unique circumstances of the North-Eastern states when allocating central funds. He argued that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to development is inadequate and that targeted interventions are necessary to address the region’s specific needs. This includes investment in areas like road and rail infrastructure, renewable energy, tourism, and skill development.

The call for increased funding comes at a time when the central government is focusing on accelerating economic development across all regions of the country. Sangma believes that prioritizing the North-East, particularly the smaller states, is essential for achieving inclusive growth and ensuring that no region is left behind.
