Why the Sudden Outcry? Minister Armizan Questions Timing of Criticism on Territorial Sea Law
PETALING JAYA - Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Datuk Seri Armizan Mohd Ali, has challenged critics of the Territorial Sea Law, questioning why their concerns are only being raised now, after the law has already been passed. The statement comes in response to recent remarks from former federal ministers and Sabah Members of Parliament who have voiced opposition to the legislation.
Armizan, who is also a Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leader, expressed his bewilderment at the timing of the criticism. He pointed out that these individuals held positions of power during the law's passage and seemingly did not raise objections at that time. “Why object now?” he asked, suggesting that their current stance appears opportunistic and lacks genuine concern for Sabah’s interests.
The Territorial Sea Law, enacted to clarify Malaysia's maritime boundaries and strengthen enforcement capabilities, has been a subject of debate, particularly in Sabah. While proponents argue it is crucial for safeguarding national sovereignty and protecting marine resources, critics have raised concerns about potential impacts on traditional fishing communities and state autonomy.
Armizan emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue and collaboration between the federal government and Sabah on matters concerning the state's rights and interests. He stated that the government is open to addressing legitimate concerns and finding solutions that balance national security with the well-being of local communities. However, he cautioned against politically motivated criticisms that could undermine the law's objectives and create unnecessary divisions.
“We welcome feedback and suggestions for improvement, but it's crucial that these are presented in a responsible and constructive manner,” Armizan added. “Attacking the law now, after it has been enacted, serves no purpose other than to create confusion and undermine public trust.”
The Minister’s remarks highlight the ongoing tensions surrounding the Territorial Sea Law and the need for a nuanced discussion about its implications for Sabah and Malaysia as a whole. The government remains committed to upholding the law while addressing concerns and ensuring the sustainable management of Malaysia’s marine resources.
This situation underscores the importance of proactive engagement and transparent communication between all stakeholders in the legislative process. It also serves as a reminder that criticisms should be raised at the appropriate time, allowing for meaningful consideration and amendments before a law is enacted.
