PM Anwar: Dialogue, Not Street Protests, Key to Addressing Concerns - Upholding Free Speech in Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur, July 26 – Following the recent “Turun” rally in Kuala Lumpur, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has firmly reaffirmed his government’s dedication to upholding freedom of expression and peaceful assembly in Malaysia. However, he emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue and engagement beyond street protests as the primary means of addressing public concerns.
Speaking after the rally, Anwar acknowledged the right of citizens to voice their opinions and participate in peaceful demonstrations. “We respect the right to express themselves, to gather peacefully, and to voice their concerns,” he stated. “But we must also recognize that real and lasting change comes through dialogue, negotiation, and collaboration.”
The “Turun” rally, drawing thousands of participants, aimed to highlight various issues including cost of living pressures, concerns about government policies, and calls for greater accountability. While Anwar acknowledged the validity of some of these concerns, he urged protestors to channel their energy into productive discussions with the government and relevant stakeholders.
