Gallo Nero: The One to Watch? Michael Hawkes Backs Star for BRC Sires' Produce Stakes Triumph
Michael Hawkes, a name synonymous with racing excellence, has boldly declared Gallo Nero the 'horse to beat' in the upcoming BRC Sires' Produce Stakes. Following a less-than-ideal first-up performance, Hawkes remains supremely confident that his stable star is primed to deliver a winning performance at Doomben.
“We’re not worried about anyone,” Hawkes stated confidently. “Gallo Nero has a great temperament and a lot of ability. That first run wasn't a true reflection of what he's capable of. He just needed it, and he’s bounced back beautifully since then.”
The BRC Sires' Produce Stakes is a key race on the Queensland racing calendar, attracting some of the brightest young talents in the country. Gallo Nero, a highly regarded two-year-old, has already demonstrated his potential with impressive victories in previous outings, and Hawkes believes the step up to 1400m will be to his advantage.
What Went Wrong First-Up?
Hawkes was keen to downplay the significance of Gallo Nero’s initial run this campaign. “He just got caught in traffic, really. He didn’t get a clean run through, and he had to work hard to get into the clear. It took the edge off him,” he explained. “But he’s a tough horse, and he’s shown us plenty in his work since then.”
Queensland Winter Carnival Prospects
Meanwhile, the Hawkes stable has unfortunately received a setback with Schiller. The talented galloper is expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks, ruling him out of contention for the prestigious Queensland Winter Carnival. “It’s disappointing news, but these things happen,” Hawkes conceded. “We’ll focus on getting him back to full fitness and aiming for bigger things later in the year.”
Focus on Gallo Nero
Despite the Schiller setback, all eyes are firmly on Gallo Nero as he prepares for the BRC Sires' Produce Stakes. With Hawkes' unwavering support and a promising lead-up, the two-year-old is shaping up to be a formidable contender. Punters and racing enthusiasts alike will be eagerly anticipating his performance at Doomben, hoping to witness a thrilling victory for this rising star. The stable is expecting a much improved performance and are confident Gallo Nero can solidify his position as one of the leading two-year-olds in Australia.
